Elementary History Jan. 3 – Jan. 11

This post will be the last post on this website. Parents can use Renweb to view their student’s class plans, grades and important information for the weeks that follow.

Grade 1 – Social Studies

Day 1 – Wednesday

  • Discuss class rules and procedures.  Label desks with name tags
  • Introductory statements to Tour of the World
  • Pass out “passports” made by teacher.  Turn to the centerfold of passports and refer to the world map.
  • Review oceans and continents.
  • Learn a song about the oceans.

Day 2 – Thursday

  • Today, we will review cardinal directions and explore the country we live in, the U.S.A.
  • We will review the 7 continents and sing the “Oceans Song”.
  • Students will add the following to their passport pictures, work on a J.S. page.  They will add an American flag and draw a national symbol.  Add the notes: “50 states” and a map of the state they live in (N.C. or S.C.)
  • Craft: Make a paper compass to use on our visits around the world.

Day 3 – Monday

  • Mexico is the first country we will visit.  We will check our passport map and set our compass.  We will glue a Mexican flag to our passport and write the word “Mexico” at the top of our passport page.
  • We will learn 10 interesting facts about Mexico.  We will read and discuss Social Studies K-5, pp.75-80. We will draw a picture in our passport of a sombrero.
  • We will learn to say 9 colors in Spanish by coloring a worksheet with 9 sombreros.
  • We will pray for the people of Mexico.

Day 4 – Wednesday

  • Peru is the next country we will visit.  We will check our passport map and set our compass.  We will glue a flag to our passport and write the word “Peru” at the top of our passport page.
  • We will learn 10 interesting facts about Peru.  We will read and discuss Social Studies K-5, pp.73 – 77. We will draw a picture in our passport.
  • We will learn about the ancient Inca civilization.
  • We will pray for the people of Peru.

Day 5 – Thursday

  • England is the next country we will visit.  We will check our passport map and set our compass.  We will glue a English flag to our passport and write the word “England” at the top of our passport page.
  • We will learn 10 interesting facts about England.  We will read and discuss Social Studies K-5, pp.79 – 83. We will draw a picture in our passport.
  • We will sing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”
  • We will a “tea time” with ice tea and cookies. We will watch a YouTube video about the sights in England.
  • We will pray for the people of England.

Grade 5 – Our Presidents

Day 1 – Wednesday

  • Introduction to Our Presidents.  Complete President George Washington Word Search #2 from www.apple4theteacher.com.
  • Begin Presidents’ Book with teacher instruction.  Record facts about George Washington and Martha Washington.
  • Discuss Washington’s leadership qualities.
  • Complete a timeline page with facts about the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the cotton gin, the Whiskey Rebellion and the Jay Treaty.

Day 2 – Thursday

  • History movie: 30 minutes Election Day Choosing Our President or The American Presidents (depending on availability) followed by 20 minutes of discussion on the topic.

Day 3 – Monday

  • Starter activity. Teacher reads the “Good Old Days of Medicine” p. 13-15 from American Adventures – True Stories From America’s Past by Morrie Greenberg. Discuss George Washington’s death.
  • Take turns reading John Adams by Muriel L.Dubois (a photo illustrated biography)
  • Discuss Adams leadership qualities.  Answer Points to Ponder questions on p. 11 of US Presidents Past & Present by George R. Lee
  • Activity – read the First Amendment to the Constitution.  Use p.252 in The History of Our United States by A Becka Books.
  • Complete the timeline from 1897-1801. Add Johnny Appleseed and tell his story.

Day 4 – Wednesday

  • Complete word search for Thomas Jefferson.  Work in partners.
  • Discuss the life and leadership qualities of Thomas Jefferson and the First Lady, his daughter, Martha Washington Jefferson Randolph.
  • Read Chapter 12, Our Nation Grows, p.131-135.  Discuss the Barbary Pirates and the Louisiana Purchase.  Add them to Jefferson’s timeline page.

 

Day 5 – Thursday

  • Finish Worst of Friends and complete comparison graphic organizer about Adams and Jefferson.
  • Read and add to the graphic organizer leadership trade differences from David McCullough’s book, John Adams.
  • Draw a timeline add important dates to notebooks.
  • Discuss the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. Examine

study map and timeline on p. 130 in History text.  Read p. 135, The United States
